Oxford Presbytery Camping Committee
2006 Report
The 2006 camping season was a memorable one at Camp Tanner. Good weather,
good campers, good staff and good food all contributed to the success of the
camps. Two hundred and eighty-six campers attended in 2006 which is down 23
campers from 2005.
Erin Harlow and Tracy Buchanan were the very capable program directors for
all six weeks. Beth Estill organized the craft program as well as training the
senior campers and the counsellors-in-training. There were 29 senior campers
enrolled this summer who will be counselors-in-training next year.
The daily program included polar dip, morning watch, crafts, nature study,
swimming instruction, games, Christian education, cabin time, large group games,
interest sessions, evening game, campfire and vespers.
Our dedicated chaplains Rev. Eloi Gunn, Rev. Stephen Hershey, Rev. Janice
Aicken, Rev. Maurice Francis, Scott McLeod, Fred and Elizabeth Heeney and Rev.
Randy Covey provided excellent Christian Education sessions.
The pool, which is an important part of the daily camp program, was very
capably guarded by Lucy Kinnear, Kathryn Walton, Melanie Chown, Andy McTaggart,
Lindsay De Jongh, Karin Blackman and Hilary Irvine.
Campfires were more fun than ever as our new permanent campfire circle was in
place. Dave Schurman, Bruce McLeod, Dave Leslie, Jim Blackman, Derek Eddy and
other dedicated volunteers completed the task. The seating at the outdoor chapel
was also improved.
The dedicated U.C.W. and Kiwanis Club volunteer cooks were assisted by Emily
Walton, Lorraine Underwood and Sheila Greason. Cooks from Knox United (Embro),
U.C.W.
Presbyterial, St. Paul's (Tillsonburg), St. Andrews (Brooksdale), Innerkip,
Chalmers (Kintore), Hebron, Foldens, Hickson, Westminster (Thamesford), Kiwanis
Club of
Tillsonburg, Avondale (Tillsonburg), St. David's, Trinity (Ingersoll),
Washington, Bright, Central (Woodstock), Norwich, Curries, Oxford Centre and
Ruth Skillings, Gail Daniels,
Becky Kittmer, Dianne Greason and Pat Young prepared tasty and bountiful meals.
Foods that were really enjoyable were the turkey dinner, roast beef dinner,
pancake
breakfast and the Wednesday night cookout. Homemade cookies baked by Brent and
Andréa McRoberts were a treat.
Sandra Schurman returned for six weeks as a very capable nurse, friend,
advisor and business manager. Her love of camping lifts everyone’s spirits.
Staff appreciation took place at the camp on August 25 with Janet Uren as
guest speaker. Dedication of the new campfire circle took place.
Thank you for your support of our cookbook, “S‘mores And More”.. The first
printing was sold out and the second printing is almost sold out. A fundraising
dinner auction is planned for February 24, 2007 at the Thamesford Community
Centre.
The Oxford Presbytery Camping Committee has an exciting new camp planned for
2007. We will be working with Rev. EIoi Gunn to present a sports camp, teaching
skills in basketball, soccer and volleyball. The camp will be a part of the
senior boys’ week. The morning program will remain the same and the sports
skills will be the afternoon program.
The Camping Committee thanks you for your ongoing support. Donations may be
sent to David Leslie, R.R. #3, Ingersoll, N5C 3J6
The Camping Committee also acknowledges the significant donation of storage
boxes from the Kiwanis Club of Tillsonburg, cereal from Kellogg's of Canada and
cheese from the Bright Cheese House
